(prönus
kam-pan-ū-lāta)
LEAVES: Alternate, simple, ovate, oval or slightly obovate, 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 long, 1 to 1 3/4(2 1/2) wide, slender-pointed, broadly wedge-shaped to slightly heart-shaped at the base, margins regularly set with fine forward-pointing or slightly incurved teeth, lustrous dark green, 6 to 8 vein pairs, glabrous; petiole-1/2 to 3/4 long; stipules feathery, much divided.
Prunus
campanulata
is a small, graceful tree ranging from 20 to 30
in height. The young leaves emerge rich green and become dark green
at maturity and develop bronzy red fall color. Before the leaves
emerge, the deep rose, 3/4
diameter flowers appear 2 to 6 together on 1/2 to 3/4
long pedicels that arise from a 1 to 1 1/2
long peduncle. The calyx tube is also deep rose and offers color
after the petals have abscised. The red fruits are about 1/2
long and about 3/8
wide. In my mind, the flowers may be the most handsome of all
ornamental cherries.
